The third Thursday of every month\, Alienated Majesty Books\, Hablemos escritoras\, and the Spanish Creative Writing Initiative at UT Austin invite you to listen and read\, out loud\, the works of students and our favorite authors to celebrate the richness of this diverse and expansive language and share its culture. \n✦✦✦ ABOUT THE ORGS ✦✦✦ \nProduced in Austin\, Texas\, and founded in 2018\, Hablemos escritoras is the largest encyclopedia and voice repository in the world specializing in female writers\, translators\, and critics in Spanish\, as well as the publishing houses and magazines that publish them. Our website fosters interactive discovery through book reviews\, indices\, search tags\, and a catalog with thousands of titles. Every week we release a new episode on the site and on major podcast platforms. On our blog\, we post mini-reviews and book recommendations\, along with posts about literature\, culture\, and society. \nThe Spanish Creative Writing Initiative was launched in the Fall 2019\, with the visit of author and screen-writer Laura Esquivel. It is designed to give our students the tools to explore new ways of expression\, expand their imagination\, and improve their writing. In these years\, through our selection of course offerings at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as workshops conducted with distinguished authors from all over the Spanish-speaking world\, we have worked together with our students to celebrate the creative component of the language in the classrooms. The result is a formidable collection of fiction and non-fiction works that soon will be published in a book.

SUMMARY:Changarrito Residency: Carla Santillana
DESCRIPTION:About the Artist\nCarla Santillana is an artist and art educator from Brownsville\, Texas\, based in San Antonio. Working across oil painting\, stitched textile collage\, and works on paper\, she balances studio practice with community engagement and arts education. Santillana holds a Master’s in Art Education from Texas Tech University and a Bachelor’s in Art Education from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Recent exhibitions include Sacred Spaces (Flower Shop Art Studio\, Brownsville\, 2025)\, Mujer-Eres: Raíces (San Benito Cultural Center\, 2025)\, Zine Gala (The Brick\, San Antonio\, 2025)\, and That Which Binds Us (Cactus Valley Art & Supply Co.\, Harlingen\, 2025). \nArtist Statement\nMy current work explores how rage is manifested\, inherited\, and released in the body. As a woman from a maternal lineage where frustration was often contained or dismissed\, I use this anger as a passage towards healing and agency. I treat denim as a representation of flesh. Its flexible\, resilient fibers mirror the body’s capacity to store and release trauma. Denim provides an intimate connection to my body while meeting me with its own material resistance and autonomy. These works give voice to the women in my family\, who have been historically overlooked. Rage here becomes the catalyst for agency\, a force I strive to redirect toward healing\, forgiveness\, and growth. \n\n\n\n\nLook at Carla’s work\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChangarrito Cart – April 2\,3\,16 in San Antonio & 18-19 in Austin\nArtists have the opportunity to sell their art on the Changarrito cart in front of the Museum (or an offsite location\, as representative for the Museum during various Austin festivals). Changarreando expands the reach of the artist by presenting their gallery online\, while allowing the option to sell merch over Instagram and receive 100% of the sale. \nCarla will be featuring her artwork on April 2nd\, 3rd\,16th in San Antonio at Print Matrix Space\, 1420 South Alamo\, from 6 – 10 PM. Then on April 18th & 19th from 12 – 3 PM in front of Mexic-Arte Museum on the Changarrito Cart. \nFollow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates on original work available for purchase and behind the scenes of the artist’s work\, space\, and creative process.

SUMMARY:Rosas y Revelaciones: Homage to la Virgen de Guadalupe
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION\nFriday\, April 17 — 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. \nABOUT THE EXHIBIT\n\nAbout the Exhibit \nMexic-Arte Museum is proud to announce the opening of Rosas y Revelaciones: Homage to la Virgen de Guadalupe\, an exhibition honoring one of Mexico’s most enduring cultural and spiritual icons through ninety extraordinary textile works. Curated by Luisa Fernanda Perez\, this exhibition will be on display from April 17th to August 9th. \nCoordinated by Linda Hanna\, Rosas y Revelaciones brings together extraordinary garments and wearable works of art inspired by the image of la Virgen de Guadalupe\, created by textile artists from across Mexico. The collection reflects both deep devotion and bold artistic innovation\, offering visitors an intimate look at the ways traditional techniques can express profound faith\, imagination\, and identity. \nOriginally rooted in Hanna’s long residence in Oaxaca and her close relationships with artisans there\, the exhibition represents a remarkable range of textile traditions. The exhibition focuses primarily on clothing\, reflecting the historical tradition of la Virgen de Guadalupe’s first appearance on a tilma (cloak). \nThe exhibit is a true cross-section of Mexico’s rich textile heritage\, featuring works from artists representing sixteen states\, including Oaxaca\, Chiapas\, Chihuahua\, Guerrero\, Michoacán\, Puebla\, Veracruz\, and Yucatán. Featured artists from Mexico include master textile creators such as artisans from Teotitlán del Valle (Oaxaca)\, San Andrés Larráinzar (Chiapas)\, Tenango de Doria (Hidalgo)\, and Santa Clara del Cobre (Michoacán)\, among others\, whose garments reinterpret la Virgen through embroidery\, weaving\, appliqué\, beadwork\, and mixed media techniques. \nThe exhibition also features photographs by Jesse Herrera\, documenting Our Lady of Guadalupe Church\, an essential spiritual and cultural site for the Mexican and Mexican American communities of Austin. Herrera is featured in Rosas y Revelaciones for his powerful photographic documentation of the church\, which is the first Catholic church established specifically to serve Mexican and Mexican Americans in Austin. Founded in 1907\, the church became a cornerstone of spiritual life\, cultural preservation\, and community organizing for generations of Mexican and Mexican American families. \nHis photographs\, drawn from the Mexic-Arte Museum permanent collection\, document both devotional practices and the architectural and communal life of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Importantly\, the original church was located within Austin’s historic 5th Street Mexican American Cultural District\, an area central to the cultural\, artistic\, and civic history of Mexican and Mexican American communities in the city. Through his lens\, Herrera captures not only the physical presence of the church but also the presence of la Virgencita in this community space of Austin\, Texas\, affirming her enduring spiritual and cultural significance. \nSince 1531\, la Virgen de Guadalupe has shaped the cultural and artistic identity of México. Rosas y Revelaciones: Homage to la Virgen de Guadalupe affirms her enduring power\, not only as a religious icon\, but as a universal symbol of hope\, identity\, and resilience. Her image is deeply woven into the cultural fabric of Latin America and beyond. \nSPECIAL TOURS\n\nTo celebrate this exhibit\, Mexic-Arte will host two special tours free to the public. The first tour will be led by featured artist and photographer Jesse Herrera\, on Sunday\, April 19th at 12 pm. The second tour will be led by textile artist and project founder\, Linda Hanna\, on Sunday\, April 26th at 12 pm.  \nMuseum Admission is always free on Sundays\, thanks to HEB and the Downtown Austin Alliance. \nFEATURED ARTISTS\n\nJesse Herrera – Born in Monterrey\, Mexico\, Jesse Herrera earned his B.A. in 1975 in art design from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a M.A. Degree in photojournalism from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990. Herrera began his photography career in Chicago working as a corporate photographer for the People’s Gas Company. Relocating to Austin in 1978\, he worked for several state agencies\, including the Texas Department of Agriculture\, the State Preservation Board\, and the Texas House of Representatives. \nDETAILS\n\nExhibition: Rosas y Revelaciones: Homage to la Virgen de Guadalupe \nDates: April 17 – August 9\, 2026 \nLocation: Mexic-Arte Museum\, 419 Congress Avenue\, Austin\, TX \nHours: Monday – Thursday\, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Friday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. & Sunday\, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Marie Antoinette: Vampire Queen of Versailles
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by The Butler New Choreography Endowment\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConcept & Choreography – Stephen Mills\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLive Accompaniment – Austin Symphony Orchestra\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMusic – Graham Reynolds\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE STORY \nThe ballet opens with the marriage of Marie Antoinette. Married to King Louis XVI\, she becomes trapped inside the gilded cage of Versailles\, where she is scrutinized\, mistrusted\, and denied agency over nearly every aspect of her life. She is publicly examined\, judged\, and longing for affection in a loveless marriage. \nDuring an evening at the theater\, she glimpses scenes of passion and devotion which awaken her forbidden desire. In the Hall of Mirrors\, she encounters Axel von Fersen\, a military man who offers earthly romance — as well as a mysterious vampire who offers something far more intoxicating: power\, immortality\, and vengeance. \nFaced with an impossible choice between human love and supernatural seduction\, Marie Antoinette chooses to be “turned.” As her transformation unfolds\, innocence fractures\, betrayal sharpens\, and the line between victim and villain blurs. \nSeductive. Decadent. Deliciously dangerous. Marie Antoinette: Vampire Queen of Versailles reframes one of history’s most infamous women as the antiheroine of her own macabre fairytale.
